The first ever daily newspaper - in Welsh!
An unusual meeting will take place on Friday 9th June at the Commonwealth Society, Northumberland Avenue. From 7pm people will gather there to find out about the historic venture to set up a daily newspaper in Welsh - for the first time in the history of the language.
According to broadcaster, Huw Edwards, "This is the most important development for the Welsh-language media since the establishment of S4C in 1982. It must succeed."
The paper, due to be launched in spring 2007, will be called Y BYD ('The World'), and will be available in newsagents in London, as well as in Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and - naturally - the whole of Wales. People in other parts of the country and overseas will be able to subscribe to an online version.
The paper will carry Welsh, British and international news and sport, comment and analysis, and daily supplements on specific themes. It will be resolutely independent, in content and in ownership, and will provide space for voices from across the political spectrum.
Support and enthusiasm for the paper is already significant in Wales. The 'London Welsh' have a long and honourable tradition of supporting groundbreaking ventures back in their homeland, and the meeting on Friday evening hopes to harness their backing for this historic undertaking.
